The Mars bar has only been open for a few weeks, but its quirky theme and urban charm offer an experience thats a bit different than the other pubs in Hamtramck. Here’s our impressions.
The Mars Bar is located 10001 Joseph Campau in Hamtramck. It’s just after the Wendy’s fast food joint if you’re heading south, or just before it if you’re heading north. The bar was opened several weeks ago by an enterprising pair of entrepreneurs, Mike and Mark.
The bar is a bit different from other bars in town. Versus the somewhat old fashioned saloon vibe of The Painted Lady or the Modern industrial feel of The Belmont, the Mars Bar feels more artsy and urban. Decorated in reds, with candles on the tables and with a large flatscreen TV playing classic black and white and vintage movies, many patrons remark that the bar has a New York Cityesque feel to it.
There’s numerous drink specials, including a unique concoction featuring absinthe, which changes colors. Ask bartender Dick Ball about it.
The bar is 21 and up only. There is a dress code — in that baggy pants or sports clothes are generally not deemed acceptable. Unlike other bars where you just walk in, there is a greeter keeping an eye on these kind of things at the door.
On Monday nights the bar comes alive with sweet House beats from Detroit’s own House Gallery DJs. There’s definitely a dance friendly vibe present, but the music is also pleasant enough just to chill to.
On Wednesdays it’s brew and view night. There’s specials on local brews (typically 1/2 off) and you can sit around and watch the vintage movie of the evening.
On Saturday’s there’s even salsa dancing lessons (though we weren’t able to check this out!). Overall, we’ve been to the Mars Bar several times and come away with a very positive impression.
The best part about the Mars Bar is that for a place with such a cool vibe, and awesome events, business is just picking up. Its a great place to take your friends currently, without having to deal with the crowds. Check it out now before this catch becomes everyone in town’s new favorite bar.
